The Draft North Solent Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) public consultation aims to encourage greater public knowledge of the coastal issues facing the Solent over the next 100 years whilst providing stakeholders and the general public with the opportunity to comment on the draft SMP policies. Comments and responses received during the consultancy period will be considered when determining the final SMP policies and will ensure informed decisions are made about future coastal management. The public consultation will run for a period of 3 months from 1st February 2010 to 23rd April 2010.

The SMP breaks down the coastline into different sections and recommends one of four policies for each area:

  • Hold the line – maintain or upgrade the level of protection provided by existing defences
  • Advance the line – build new defences seaward of existing defences
  • Managed Realignment – allow retreat of the shoreline with management to control or limit movement
  • No active intervention – not to invest in providing or maintaining defences

Public exhibitions are being held across the North Solent area. They will provide local people with the opportunity to view the proposed policies and to discuss any issues, concerns or comments. All that attend will be registered and given feedback forms to ensure that all the comments are formally recorded.

The consultation relevant to Chichester’s coastal frontage covers the area between Emsworth and Selsey Bill. This will be held on

Thursday 8th February 2010

Time: between 2.00pm and 7.00pm

Venue: Committee Room 1, Chichester District Council, East Pallant House, East Pallant, Chichester PO19 1TY. Please go to reception and ask for directions.
