2026 Impact of rain events on sediment

2026 Impact of rain events on sediment

Low-tide rainfall events can strongly influence sediment dynamics in intertidal systems, but their role remains understudied, especially in engineered environments such as Managed Realignment sites. Continental Shelf Research has published this paper by Dr Heidi Burgess, University of Brighton, examining the subject. The paper looks at the influence of natural precipitation on suspended sediment concentrations, bed elevation, and sediment fate at Pagham Harbour, a historic unManaged Realignment site on the south coast of the UK.

Fishing has been a part of Selsey Bill, West Sussex and the surrounding areas since the Bronze Age. Local fishermen tell of huge changes to the fishing grounds in recent years, about the small numbers of lobsters being caught locally, and large influxes of sediment arriving in their fishing grounds. Needing to understand these changes led to the development of... Read More»

Letter from David Attenborough

Letter from David Attenborough

We were so pleased to receive a letter from David Attenborough about the CHASM project. CHASM’s first year report and project document were sent to the great man, who kindly found time to reply. We were then completely overwhelmed to receive a second letter in 2025 in response to the release of the CHASM Sediment Report 2024. He extended his best... Read More»
