In 2018, the UK government consulted on making biodiversity net gain (BNG) mandatory for new development on land, and respondents suggested that net gain principles should be extended to marine developments.<\/p>\n

A consultation on Marine Net Gain is being held in August 2022. The consultation runs until the end of August, but the consultation document contains a clear definition of Marine Net Gain that outlives the consultation and is worth reading.<\/p>\n

The aims of Marine Net Gain are to:
\n\u2022 secure positive outcomes for the environment by contributing to halting and
\nreversing the longer-term trend of biodiversity decline through the restoration and
\ncreation of healthy and high-quality marine and coastal habitats, and protection of
\nspecies
\n\u2022 deliver lasting improvements, contributing to ocean recovery, and supporting efforts
\nin climate change mitigation, resilience, and adaptation
\n\u2022 enable the responsible and sustainable growth of marine industries and
\ndevelopment activities, recognising their essential contribution to meeting the UK
\ngovernment\u2019s climate change commitments, whilst ensuring the protection of our
\nmarine environment
