The Sussex Otters and Rivers Partnership are inviting volunteers to attend otter and water vole survey Training Days to be held at Winchester City Mill (National Trust building) in Winchester on:

Friday 26th March 2010

Mon 26th April 2010

Tues 5th October 2010

There are 20 places on each of the three Training Days which will be allocated on a first come first served basis. These will be free to all participants unless attendance is part of a professional qualification for a consultancy.

Most people are interested in both otters and water voles therefore training sessions for the two have been combined. Training will take a whole day covering survey techniques and identification of both species as well as a field trip/site visit in the afternoon (running from approximately 10am till 4pm).

The Training Days are aimed at trying to set up a team of committed volunteers who can go out and survey Sussex wetland sites at least once a year for either or both species. Those with ambitions to become long term water vole and otter spotters will be most welcome!

The Mill is around 15 mins walk from the railway station through the High Street. There is car parking near to the building on the B3404 - Chesil St car park at a cost of up to £5 for the day. There is also a multi storey car park, but parking is only offered for a few hours.

All volunteers will need to bring their own lunch or buy it at nearby shops, although tea and coffee will be provided. Please bring wellies or sturdy footwear and waterproofs.

To give you a better idea of where both species are likely to be found, take a look at copies of the recent newsletters produced by Sussex Otters & Rivers Partnership about otters and water voles in Sussex.
