Throughout the austerity period seafood has struggled to compete with other proteins, partly due to its high average price. However, last year as the UK slowly but steadily continued to move out of austerity, seafood started to recover with foodservice sales back in full growth by December 2015 and full growth in multiple retail by October 2016.<\/p>\n
In retail, the growth of chilled seafood is boosting total seafood sales, whilst frozen and ambient remain in decline. But, in 2016, indulgent species like roe, caviar and oysters, and new exciting packaging and meal formats which appeal to young affluent seafood shoppers, are slowing ambient\u2019s decline and may even fuel a return to growth.<\/p>\n
